The decision to become an egg donor is a serious one that requires careful thought and consideration. For many infertile couples, the possibility of conceiving using a donor egg represents a rare opportunity to fulfill their dream of becoming parents. Likewise, the ability to help such people start their families is what motivates many young women to become egg donors. At our Reno clinic near Lake Tahoe and Carson City, Dr. Russell Foulk performs infertility treatments with the help of generous egg donors. If you have considered donating eggs, please review the frequently asked questions below, and contact our fertility clinic to learn more about egg donation.
Egg donors at our Reno office, serving Lake Tahoe, Carson City, and the entire region, should be between 21 and 30 years old and in good general health. Women who are non-smokers, have no history of infertility, and have a healthy body weight and excellent medical history are good candidates for egg donation. However, because the decision to donate eggs is a serious one, we require that potential egg donors undergo a series of physical and psychological exams as part of the screening process.
Once our egg donors have cleared all the necessary medical and psychological exams and have been matched with a recipient, they start taking oral contraceptives to coordinate their menstrual cycle with the recipient’s. The donors then begin daily hormone injections to stimulate egg production. At the peak of egg production, the eggs are removed in a minor procedure and combined with the sperm to create embryos.
In order to retrieve the eggs, the donor is sedated, and Dr. Foulk removes fluid containing the eggs from the ovaries using a thin needle and ultrasound machine. The procedure normally lasts less than 30 minutes and requires little recovery time.
Egg donors at our Reno / Lake Tahoe practice administer daily hormone injections on their own. For ultimate convenience, the only time our egg donors need to be at the office is the day of egg retrieval. We monitor all progress from afar, making it easy for qualified women to donate eggs.
