What are the most common causes of infertility?

The most common causes of infertility for women include ovulation disorders, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, abnormalities in the uterus such as the presence of fibroids, age, and endometriosis. For men, common causes of infertility include low sperm mobility, failure to produce enough sperm, blocked reproductive pathways, and abnormal semen. Depending on each couple’s particular causes of infertility, our Reno clinic, serving Lake Tahoe and the surrounding areas, can diagnose the problem and help find the best treatment solution.

Why do people choose egg donation over adoption?

Adoption and egg donation are both excellent options for infertile couples. Oftentimes, people choose egg donation because they would prefer to have a baby with the father’s genes. Also, many women consider pregnancy an opportunity to bond with the baby and have total control over the substances to which the fetus is exposed. Additionally, donor egg recipients can select a donor that has physical or personality traits similar to their own.

What medical treatments are involved for the recipient?

When a woman decides she would like to conceive using a donor egg, she first undergoes a series of tests to confirm that pregnancy would not put her at any medical risk. After selecting a donor, the recipient’s menstrual cycle is coordinated with the donor’s through hormone pills. The recipient’s uterus is prepared to receive the egg with estrogen and progesterone doses until the embryos are implanted through in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. At our Reno / Lake Tahoe-area office, we normally continue the hormone treatments for two to three months after the implantation to help ensure a successful, healthy pregnancy.

How are egg donors screened?

At the Nevada Center for Reproductive Medicine, we screen donors for infectious diseases and for common genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis. We perform all the appropriate screenings, and we are happy to conduct additional tests at the recipient’s request.

What information is provided about the egg donor?

We provide certain important details about the medical and family history; a description of physical traits such as height, weight, hair, and eye color, ethnicity, and skin tone; information on the donor’s educational background; and any hobbies or other activities that she enjoys.
